Job Description:

The AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that pursues basic and applied studies aimed at improving our understanding of AIDS-associated viruses and disease, including studies intended to facilitate the improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HIV infection and AIDS. The Program consists of five independent but highly interactive research Sections headed by Principal Investigators, whose work spans from fundamental molecular virology through in vitro studies, to in vivo studies in non-human primate (NHP) models. The ACVP also has eight Research Support Core Groups (Cores) that provide critical and often unique technical support capabilities to ACVP laboratories and other laboratories within the NCI and NIH, and to extramural investigators. Key Roles/Responsibilities The Scientist/Principal Investigator will be responsible for: The ACVP is seeking an outstanding, innovative, highly motivated, collaborative scientist to join the Program as a Scientist/ Principal Investigator, joining four other Principal Investigators. The successful candidate will bring experience and expertise in adoptive cellular immunotherapy using engineered lymphocyte approaches, to assume responsibility for a research program characterizing effective cellular immune responses in AIDS virus infection and applying this information to a state-of-the-art effort in adoptive cellular immunotherapy using ex vivo engineered lymphocytes in nonhuman primate models of AIDS virus infection. Specific areas of research include Characterization of effective antiviral T cell responses in humans and in nonhuman primate models, including specificity and effector properties Molecular engineering of lymphocytes to optimize beneficial properties such as antiviral activity and viral resistance, with evaluation in vitro and in vivo in non-human primate models (adoptive cellular immunotherapy). The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other ACVP investigators and scientists from outside the program and will be responsible for their own independent research and collaborative studies aligned with the mission of the ACVP, taking responsibility for conception, organization, direction/execution of projects, along with presentation of the work at high profile scientific meetings and eventual publication. The successful candidate will also be expected to successfully present and defend their work to a committee of subject matter experts at quadrennial Site Visit Reviews. Basic Qualifications: This is a dual level requisition and can be filled as either a Scientist III/Principal Investigator: Possession of a PhD, MD or DVM (or equivalent) or related discipline. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an Leidos-approved accrediting organization to assure that it meets the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. Applicant must have a minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate experience, including multiple years of demonstrated innovation and published productivity in a relevant research area, with supervisory/management experience a plus. Scientist IV/Principal Investigator: Possession of a PhD, MD or DVM (or equivalent) or related discipline. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by a Leidos-approved accrediting organization to assure that it meets the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. Applicant must have a minimum of eight (8) years of post-graduate experience, including multiple years of demonstrated innovation and published productivity in a relevant research area, with supervisory/management experience. All candidates must have: This position will require a high degree of proficiency in both verbal and written scientific communication, and outstanding presentation skills. In addition, this position will require the individual to be highly motivated, able to conceive and perform original research, and work well both in a team and independently. The candidate will successfully complete projects and published scientific manuscripts. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance before start date. Experience with and expertise in ex vivo lymphocyte engineering for adoptive cellular immunotherapy is required; prior experience with nonhuman primate models for AIDS virus infection is highly desirable, but not required. Preferred: Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: Background in HIV/SIV research especially in Non-Human Primate models Strong communication skills, capable of effective presentation to scientific audiences; Demonstrated ability to conceive, perform and oversee original research to publication-worthy milestones. Expected Competencies: Applicant must be highly skilled in techniques of virology, cell biology, immunology. This position will require a high degree of proficiency in both verbal and written scientific communication. In addition, this position will require the individual to be highly motivated and work well both in a team and independently.
